Social Justice

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.                                     -Article One, Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Issue

Unfortunately, many still do not believe in racial, gender, and ethnic equality. Violations of the UN’s doctrine are perpetrated daily. Here are a few examples:

- Countries use torture to extract information and keep dissidents from speaking out.

- In some Middle Eastern countries, a woman must have four witnesses of “good moral standing” to prove rape. Even if she is able to prove this, the repercussions for the rapist often are not harsh.

-In 2002, a Nigerian woman was sentenced to death by stoning because she committed adultery.

- Each year, 1.2 million children are sold into brothels as sex slaves.

- As many as 300,000 children serve in rebel armies – some are only eight years old.

- Freedom of speech is often punishable by death in some countries.

- Since 2003, the Janjaweed has systematically targeted and killed over 400,000 innocent Sudanese civilians.

I want to ensure that everyone has access to their basic human rights.
