The Grant Writer's Checklist

Lots of organizations are willing to give you money for your cool ideas - but you have got to prove to them just how good your idea is. Use this checklist to rock the grant applications process:
1. Before applying, make sure you are eligible for the grant. Some grants have age or project-related requirements that are necessary if you wish to apply. It is always wise to check the “Terms and Conditions” of a prospective grant.
2. Identify the community problem that your project will solve. Make sure you fully articulate the need in your application.
3. Provide a detailed description of your mechanism for change. What exactly will your project do, and how will it solve the proposed problem?
4. Explain how your project will sustain itself. How will you recruit volunteers and resources? How will you generate funds?
5. Provide a budget. Show how each dollar will be used (as accurately as possible). Grantmakers want to know how effectively you will use their funds.
6. Be sure to highlight your project’s future goals. How long will it take to implement change? What are your plans for expansion?
7. Highlight the impact of your project. Provide a way to quantify the change that will result due to your project. Try to be specific as possible.
8. Less is more. Write concisely and with clarity. At the same time, do not leave out key details. Answer questions fully.
9. Check spelling and grammar. Make sure your entry is polished and professional.
10. Do not be discouraged if your entry is rejected! There are many different grants available to youth, so make sure you keep trying!
